What is a powerflush?

Over the years, rust, sludge and debris build up inside your radiators and pipework. That black sludge settles at the bottom of radiators, blocks the flow and makes your boiler work harder than it should. You end up with cold spots, a system that is slow to warm through and, often, a noisy boiler.

A powerflush pushes a high flow mix of clean water and specialist cleaning chemicals through the whole system to lift and clear all of that out. We finish by adding a corrosion inhibitor that protects the system and helps stop it happening again.

Signs your system needs a powerflush

A few tell tale signs your heating could do with a flush: radiators that are cold at the bottom but warm at the top, some radiators staying cold while others get hot, dirty or black water when you bleed them, a boiler that bangs, gurgles or kettles, or a system that takes an age to warm the house through.

It is also worth doing before a new boiler goes in. Fitting a boiler onto a dirty system can shorten its life and, on most makes, the manufacturer expects the system to be clean for the warranty to stand. We will always give you an honest view on whether you genuinely need one.

Powerflushing FAQs

Common questions about powerflushing across the North East.

How long does a powerflush take? +
Most take between three and six hours, depending on the size of the system and how much sludge has built up. A bigger house with more radiators, or a badly blocked system, can take a little longer. We will give you a realistic timeframe before we start.
Will it fix my cold radiators? +
In most cases, yes. If the coldness is down to sludge and debris blocking the flow, a powerflush clears it and gets the heat moving again. If the cause is something else, like a faulty valve or pump, we will tell you honestly rather than flush for the sake of it.
Do I need a powerflush before a new boiler? +
Often, yes. Fitting a new boiler onto a dirty system can damage it, and most manufacturers expect a clean system for the warranty to stand. We will check the state of your system and let you know if it is needed.
How much does a powerflush cost? +
It depends on the size of your system and the number of radiators, so we give you a fixed price up front rather than a vague figure. Get in touch and we will sort you a quote.
Which areas do you cover? +
We are based in Houghton le Spring and cover Sunderland, Durham, Washington, Chester le Street and the wider North East. Call us and we will confirm we can reach you.
