Checking us out, and what things cost
Every gas engineer in the UK has to hold a Gas Safe registration, and you can look ours up in under a minute. Type 634641 into gassaferegister.co.uk. At the door, ask for the card and turn it over: the back lists the work the engineer is allowed to do, and gas fires and cookers are listed separately from boilers.
We give the price before we start. A boiler that has stopped is diagnosed for a fixed price from £89, with nothing added for the call out. A boiler service is from £80 + VAT. A gas fire service, a cooker or hob connection and a landlord gas safety record depend on how many appliances are in the property, so we price those when you book and confirm them before the visit.
Sometimes an appliance turns out to be unsafe. If that happens we show you what we found, explain what the rules oblige us to do, and tell you whether it can be repaired or is better disconnected. You will not be talked into replacing something that can be fixed.
What gas work looks like in Gateshead
Gateshead is a borough of contrasts for a gas engineer. Down near the river the streets are dense, with Tyneside flats and terraces built long before central heating. Up the hill in Low Fell, Sheriff Hill and Whickham the houses are bigger and often older. In between are the estates of Felling, Heworth, Pelaw and Wrekenton. Each part throws up its own gas jobs.
Two boilers in one building: the Tyneside flat
Bensham and Saltwell are full of Tyneside flats. From the street it looks like one terraced house, but it is two homes, one up and one down, with two front doors, usually two meters and two boilers. Gas pipe from the meter has to reach each flat's kitchen, and the flue and condensate pipe of the upstairs boiler often run where space is tight. When we work in one of these flats, we trace the gas pipe from the meter to every appliance it serves, test the whole run for tightness and check the flue terminal outside. Gas fires that are still in daily use
A lot of the terraces in Bensham and Saltwell still have a gas fire in the front room, and some households use it more than the heating. A fire in a chimney breast that old needs a proper yearly check: the flue swept and smoke tested, a spillage test to prove the fumes are leaving the room, the burner and the oxygen depletion sensor tested, and the fire itself cleaned. If the flue liner has failed or a part is no longer made, we say so, and we can disconnect and cap the fire safely if you decide to have it out. Kitchens in Felling, Heworth and Pelaw
Estate houses here have often had the kitchen refitted more than once, and each refit tends to leave a bit of altered gas pipe behind. When you replace a cooker or move a hob, we connect the new appliance, fit a stability chain or bracket to a freestanding cooker, check the ventilation in the room and pressure test the pipework so you know the older joints are sound too.

Gateshead has a big private rented sector, from single flats in Deckham and Dunston to portfolios spread across NE8 to NE10. Every let with gas needs a safety check on each appliance and flue every twelve months, and the record has to reach the tenants. Ring 0800 111 999 first. That is the National Gas Emergency Service, and they will make the supply safe, normally by turning it off at the meter. They do not carry out the repair. Once they have been, call us: we find the escape, fix it, test the installation and turn the gas back on.
