What to expect when we come out
We are AR Heating & Gas, a small firm run by Alex Robson from Houghton le Spring since 2010, about 12 miles from Newcastle. Our Gas Safe number is 634641. Check it on gassaferegister.co.uk before the visit, and ask the engineer for the card at the door. With any trade touching gas, that check is worth the minute it takes.
Costs are agreed first. Boiler faults get a fixed price diagnosis from £96, with no call out fee added, and the repair price is given before any part is ordered. Boiler servicing is from £80 + VAT. Gas fire checks, cooker connections and landlord records are priced when you book, based on how many appliances there are.

Gas work in Newcastle flats, terraces and shared houses
A lot of Newcastle homes are rented, from the Tyneside flats of Heaton and Arthur's Hill to the big Victorian terraces of Jesmond and Sandyford. That changes what most gas visits look like. Fewer are about one broken boiler. More are about checking every gas appliance in a property, spotting what somebody else has bodged, and leaving the owner with paperwork that stands up.
Tyneside flats
A Tyneside flat is a terraced house split into an upstairs home and a downstairs home, each with its own front door and usually its own meter and boiler. Space is tight. Gas pipes, flues and condensate pipes all have to find a route through a small footprint, and sometimes the pipe serving one flat passes through the other. When we check a flat, we follow its gas pipe from the meter to every appliance, so we know exactly what we are signing off. There is more on these homes in our post on Tyneside flat boiler rules.
Big Victorian terraces
The larger terraces in Jesmond, Heaton and Fenham were built with fireplaces in most rooms, and some still have gas fires in two or three of them. Every one of those fires needs a yearly look at the flue, the flame and the oxygen safety device, not just the one in the living room. An old fire in a bedroom that nobody has lit for years still needs checking, or capping off safely.
HMOs and shared houses
Shared houses are hard on gas appliances. Cookers get heavy use, hoses get knocked and vents get blocked. A landlord gas safety record has to cover every gas appliance and flue in the house every twelve months, and if the property is a licensed HMO the council can ask to see it. We check the lot and tell you plainly what passed and what did not.
Cookers and hobs
Connecting a gas cooker legally needs a Gas Safe engineer. We make the connection, fit a stability bracket where one is needed, check the room has the ventilation it should, and test the installation. In a small flat kitchen we also make sure the hob is not sat too close to a window or curtains.
If you smell gas
Call 0800 111 999 straight away. That is the National Gas Emergency Service, and their job is to make the supply safe. They will not fix your pipes or appliance afterwards. We trace the leak, repair it and test the installation so the gas can go back on.
