Gas Safe registered engineer checking a gas appliance

How we work and what it costs

Gas Safe ID shown at the door as a matter of course. Our registration is 634641 and you can verify it on the official register at gassaferegister.co.uk before any work starts, which in a city with a lot of unregistered trading is worth doing with anyone you use.

Diagnostic work is one fixed fee to attend and find the fault, then a fixed price for the repair agreed before anything is ordered. Certificates and servicing are quoted up front, and nothing is billed by the hour.

For landlords we deal with tenants directly for access, which is normally the hard part, and send you the paperwork rather than leaving you to chase it.

Gas work in a heavily rented city

Newcastle has one of the largest private rented sectors in the region, concentrated through Heaton, Fenham, Sandyford, Jesmond and Elswick. That shapes what gas work looks like here. A very large share of it is certificates, appliance checks and putting right things that were done cheaply by somebody unregistered.

Landlord gas safety records

Twelve monthly, every gas appliance and flue, by a Gas Safe registered engineer. In a shared house that can mean a boiler, a fire and a cooker, all of which have to be covered. We arrange access directly with tenants, which is normally the bottleneck, and issue the record on the day. Portfolios go on one schedule so certificates do not expire one at a time across the year.

Gas fires, and why they matter in the older terraces

Plenty of Victorian terraces through Heaton and Jesmond still have a gas fire, often in a room with an original chimney. Fires need an annual safety check and rarely get one. The flue, the oxygen depletion safety device and the combustion are the things that matter, and an unswept or partly blocked flue on a gas fire gives very little warning before it becomes dangerous.

Cookers and hobs

Connecting a gas cooker is Gas Safe work covering the connection, the stability bracket and the ventilation in the room. In rented property it is one of the most common things we find done incorrectly, usually by whoever delivered the appliance.

Tyneside flats and shared supplies

Flats bring their own complications. Meter positions are sometimes shared or awkward, and the existing gas supply pipe is occasionally undersized for a modern appliance running at full rate. Both are checkable with a working pressure test, and both are far better known before you commit to a new appliance.

Suspected leaks

Smell gas and the first call is the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. They isolate and make safe. They do not repair your pipework or your appliance, which is the part we handle so the supply can be restored.

What we cover beyond the boiler

Anything burning gas in your home needs a Gas Safe registered engineer, not just the boiler.

Gas engineer questions, Newcastle

Mostly asked by landlords, but useful either way.

I can smell gas. What is the first thing to do? +
Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before anyone else. Turn the supply off at the meter if you can safely reach it, open windows, and do not touch electrical switches. They make the supply safe but do not repair the fault, which is where we take over.
What has to be covered on a landlord gas safety record? +
Every gas appliance and every flue in the property, every twelve months. In a shared house that often means a boiler, a fire and a cooker rather than just the boiler. A record that only covers the boiler is not complete.
Can you deal with tenants directly for access? +
Yes, and it is usually faster. We contact the tenant, agree a time, carry out the work and send you the paperwork. Access is nearly always the bottleneck rather than the work itself.
Does a gas fire need checking as well as the boiler? +
Yes, annually, and in the older terraces with original chimneys the flue is the part most likely to be a problem. Fires are checked far less often than boilers and give very little warning when something is wrong.
How do I check an engineer is genuinely registered? +
Ask for the Gas Safe ID card and look the registration up at gassaferegister.co.uk. Ours is 634641. In a city with a lot of unregistered trading it is worth doing with anybody you use, not just us.
Can you connect a gas cooker in a flat? +
Yes. It covers the connection, the stability bracket and the ventilation in the room. In flats it is also worth checking the existing supply pipe is adequate, which we can do with a working pressure test at the same time.
