Registration, prices and straight answers
Before any engineer works on gas in your home, check they are registered. Ours is number 634641, and gassaferegister.co.uk will confirm it in seconds. When we arrive, look at the card and turn it over. The categories on the back tell you the engineer is qualified for fires and cookers as well as boilers.
You get the price first. Boiler fault finding is a fixed price from £89 and we do not add a call out charge. A boiler service is from £80 + VAT. A gas fire service, a cooker connection or a landlord record is priced when you book, once we know how many appliances are involved, and we confirm it before the visit.
If we find something unsafe we do not dress it up. We show you the problem, explain what the rules mean for that appliance and give you the choices. Where a repair is possible and sensible, that is what we recommend.
Gas work by the coast: what South Shields homes need
South Shields puts the sea right next to the housing. Westoe, Marsden and Horsley Hill sit close enough to the front to get salt in the air most days, and that matters for anything that pokes through an outside wall. Behind them are the older streets of Laygate and Tyne Dock, full of Tyneside flats, and further out the estates of Whiteleas, Simonside, Biddick Hall and Cleadon Park, plus the Boldons.
Salt air and the outside of the installation
Salt corrodes metal. Flue terminals, the seals around them, external gas pipe and its clips all age faster on the coast than they would in Durham. When we visit a seafront home for any gas job, we walk round the outside first and look at the terminal and any exposed pipe before we test what is inside. Catching a pitted terminal early is a small job. Leaving it can mean a boiler that keeps dropping out in a stiff easterly.
The older gas fires
Plenty of homes in the older streets still have a gas fire that was fitted decades ago, often sat in the original chimney breast. Those fires are worth keeping only if they are checked every year. We sweep and smoke test the flue, do a spillage test at the fire, test the oxygen depletion sensor and the flame supervision, and clean the burner. Tyneside flats in Laygate and Tyne Dock
An upstairs and a downstairs flat sharing one building means two gas supplies, two boilers and sometimes a pipe that runs through the other flat. Flue and condensate routes for the upstairs flat can be awkward. We trace the gas pipe from the meter to every appliance it feeds and test the lot, so the sign off covers the whole installation and not just the boiler.
Landlords near the town centre
There is a lot of rented housing in the streets around the town centre and towards the river, from single flats to converted houses. Each one with gas needs a safety check on every appliance and flue every twelve months, with the record going to the tenants. We can speak to tenants about access, do the check, email the record to you and flag anything that needs fixing. If you own more than one property in the town, we group them into one round.
Cookers and hobs
Connecting a gas cooker is not a job for a delivery driver. We fit the hose and bayonet, add a stability chain or bracket to a freestanding cooker, check the ventilation in the kitchen and pressure test the pipework before we leave.
If you smell gas
Call 0800 111 999, the National Gas Emergency Service, straight away. They will make the supply safe, usually by shutting it off. They do not do the repair. Once they have been, ring us. We trace the leak, put it right, test the installation and get the gas back on.
