Before we start: registration, prices and honest advice
Anyone who works on gas in your home has to be on the Gas Safe Register. Ours is 634641. Put it into gassaferegister.co.uk, then when the engineer arrives, compare the card with what the register shows. It takes a minute, and it is worth doing with every trade, not only us.
Prices are settled before the work, not added up afterwards. Boiler faults are diagnosed for a fixed price from £96, with no call out charge added. Servicing a boiler is from £80 + VAT. Fire servicing, cooker connections and landlord certificates are priced when you book.
Now and then we find an appliance that is not safe to use. When that happens we explain in plain words what is wrong and what your choices are. If it can be put right safely, we would sooner fix it than write it off.
Gas work in a new town: what is different in Washington
Washington was built in the 1960s and 1970s as a set of numbered villages, and each village went up in one go. That shapes the gas work here. Houses on the same street usually share a layout, a meter position and a route for the gas pipe from the meter through to the kitchen and the boiler. Knowing how one house in Oxclose or Sulgrave was put together tells you a fair bit about the one next door.
The original gas fires
Lots of new town homes were built with a gas fire in the lounge, and some had a back boiler behind it doing the heating and hot water. Many have been taken out since. The ones that remain are now decades old. A fire like that needs a yearly look at the flue, the flame and the safety cut off that trips when oxygen in the room drops. If the fire sits in front of a back boiler, the two share a flue and both get checked. Where parts are no longer made we will say so plainly, and if you want the fire gone we can disconnect it and cap the supply safely.
Kitchens that have moved on
Plenty of Washington kitchens have been redone two or three times since they were built. Each refit tends to leave a length of gas pipe altered or extended. When you change a cooker or move a hob, we connect the appliance, fit a stability bracket if it is freestanding, and test the whole installation so you know the older joints are sound as well.
Rented homes across the villages
If you let a house in Washington, the law wants a gas safety check every twelve months on every gas appliance and flue. We carry out the check, write up the record for your tenant and flag anything that needs attention. Owners with homes in more than one village can have them all done in the same round.
A smell of gas
Phone 0800 111 999, the National Gas Emergency Service, before you ring anyone else. Their engineer makes the supply safe, usually by turning it off. Putting the fault right is then a job for a Gas Safe engineer. We trace the escape, repair it, test the installation and get the gas back on.
Heating pipes, briefly
