Worcester Bosch EA Error Code: Causes and Fixes
The EA error code on a Worcester Bosch boiler means ignition failure. The boiler attempted to ignite but could not establish or maintain a flame. It is one of the most common Worcester fault codes and usually one of the most straightforward to resolve.
Most common causes
Frozen condensate pipe
During cold weather, the condensate pipe (the plastic pipe running from your boiler to an outside drain) can freeze solid. When it freezes, the boiler cannot drain waste water and locks out with EA. Pour warm water over the frozen pipe section, wait for it to thaw, then reset the boiler. This is the number one cause of EA codes during winter.
Gas supply issue
If your gas supply is interrupted, the boiler has nothing to ignite. Check your gas hob or other gas appliances. If nothing works, check your gas meter and contact your supplier. If other appliances work fine, the issue is within the boiler itself.
Ignition lead or electrode
The ignition system creates a spark to light the gas. The electrode can wear, crack, or become dirty over time. The ignition lead (the wire connecting the electrode to the PCB) can also degrade. Both are relatively inexpensive replacement parts.
Gas valve
If the gas valve is not opening properly, gas cannot reach the burner. This can be caused by a stuck valve, a wiring fault, or a failed valve coil. Your engineer can test this with a multimeter.
How to reset
On most Worcester Bosch boilers, press the reset button (flame icon) and hold for 3 seconds. On Greenstar models, the reset button is clearly marked on the front panel. Wait for the boiler to go through its startup sequence. If it fires and stays running, you are sorted.
If the EA code returns after resetting, the underlying fault needs professional diagnosis. Note down the code and any other information on the display, and give us a call.
