Lots of new town houses were plumbed with microbore, the thin 8mm or 10mm copper pipe you may see running to your radiators. It was cheap and quick to fit. The trouble is that it silts up far more easily than standard pipe. As sludge builds, water cannot move through the system fast enough. The boiler overheats, bangs or kettles, then locks out. Often it happens on the first really cold day, when every radiator is calling for heat at once.

What you can do right now: if the boiler has locked out, try one reset. If it runs, turn the thermostat down a little and open any radiator valves that are shut, so the water has more places to go. If it locks out again, leave it off and ring us. Forcing it can damage the heat exchanger.

Close the stopcock, switch the boiler off at the spur, and lift the carpet back so the floor can dry. Put a towel or tray under the drip. Then ring us. Microbore pipes are soft and easy to damage, so small leaks on them are common and usually quick to repair.
