Boiler Service Before Winter: Why September Beats December

Nobody enjoys spending money on a boiler that is working. But the timing of your annual service makes a real difference to what it costs you and what it saves you, and September is comfortably the best month to book it in the North East.

You find faults while they are still cheap

A service is not a formality. The engineer strips the boiler down, checks the burner and heat exchanger, runs a flue gas analysis, and tests the safety devices. That is when a seizing pump, a tired diverter valve or a partly blocked heat exchanger gets caught.

Caught in September, that is a planned repair at a time that suits you. Caught in December, it is an emergency call out with no heating in the house and whatever availability happens to exist.

You get the appointment you actually want

This is the practical argument. From the first proper frost onwards, engineers across Sunderland, Newcastle, Durham and Washington are running emergency call outs for households with no heat. Routine servicing drops down the list, and rightly so. Book in September and you pick your slot.

Your warranty depends on it

Most manufacturers require a documented annual service to keep the guarantee valid. Miss a year and you can lose the remainder of a warranty that might have had a decade left on it. Our guide on what invalidates a boiler warranty covers the detail, and it catches people out more often than you would think.

You burn less gas through the expensive months

A boiler running with a dirty burner or restricted circulation works harder for the same heat. Getting it cleaned and tuned before the heating goes on for five months is the point at which efficiency actually translates into money. Doing it in April, when you are about to switch everything off, does not.

What a proper service covers

A real service is not ten minutes and a certificate. Ours works through the full checklist: visual inspection, strip down of the internals, flue gas analysis, flue and combustion checks, gas pressure and flow against the manufacturer settings, checks for leaks and corrosion, a clean of the key components, and a carbon monoxide safety check. You get a written report at the end. Full detail is on our what is included in a boiler service guide, and pricing is covered in how much a boiler service costs.
