Boiler Warranty Explained: What Is Covered and What Voids It
A boiler warranty is one of the biggest reasons to choose a quality brand and a reputable installer. But many homeowners do not realise how easy it is to accidentally void their warranty, potentially losing thousands of pounds of cover. Here is what you need to know.
How long do boiler warranties last?
- Worcester Bosch: up to 12 years (with accredited installer)
- Vaillant: up to 10 years (with accredited installer)
- Baxi: up to 10 years (on selected models with accredited installer)
The key phrase is "with accredited installer." If your boiler is fitted by an engineer who is not accredited by the manufacturer, you may only get a standard 2 to 5 year warranty instead of the full extended term. That is a significant difference.
What is covered?
A manufacturer warranty typically covers:
- All internal parts (heat exchanger, PCB, pump, valves, sensors)
- Labour costs for warranty repairs
- Replacement parts
What is usually not covered:
- External controls and thermostats
- Limescale and sludge damage
- Frozen condensate pipes
- Power surges and electrical damage
- Cosmetic damage
- Problems caused by incorrect installation
What voids a warranty?
The most common reason warranties get voided:
Missing an annual service. Almost every manufacturer requires proof of annual servicing by a Gas Safe registered engineer to keep the warranty valid. Miss one year and the entire warranty can be voided, even if you have years of cover remaining. One missed £70 service could cost you a £2,000 repair.
Other things that void warranties:
- Unauthorised modifications or repairs
- Using non approved parts
- Failure to maintain correct system water quality
- Not registering the warranty within the required period after installation
How to protect your warranty
- Book your annual service every year without fail. Set a reminder
- Keep all service records and certificates
- Only use Gas Safe registered engineers for any work on the boiler
- Make sure your installer registers the warranty with the manufacturer at the time of installation
