How Much Does a Boiler Service Cost in 2026?
A standard boiler service in the UK costs between £60 and £100. In the North East, prices tend to sit at the lower end of that range. Here is a breakdown of what affects the price and what you should expect for your money.
What is included in a boiler service?
A proper boiler service is not just someone glancing at your boiler and ticking a box. It should take 30 to 60 minutes and include:
- Visual inspection of the boiler and its components
- Flue gas analysis using a calibrated analyser (this measures combustion efficiency and checks for carbon monoxide)
- Gas pressure check at the inlet and burner
- Ignition and flame test
- Controls and safety device check
- Heat exchanger inspection
- Condensate trap clean
- System pressure check
- Seals and gaskets inspection
If your engineer spends less than 20 minutes and does not use a flue gas analyser, you have not had a proper service.
Why prices vary
Boiler servicing is a competitive market. Prices vary based on location (London is more expensive than the North East), the engineer's overheads, and whether they are a sole trader or a large company. National companies often charge more because they have marketing budgets, call centres, and management layers to fund. A good local engineer can often provide a better service at a lower price.
Service plans vs one off services
A one off annual service costs £60 to £90. A monthly service plan typically costs £8 to £15 per month (£96 to £180 per year) but usually includes the annual service plus breakdown cover, priority call outs, and parts and labour for covered repairs.
If your boiler is under 5 years old and under warranty, a one off annual service is usually sufficient. For older boilers where the risk of breakdown is higher, a service plan can save you hundreds if something goes wrong.
Why you should never skip a service
Three reasons: safety, warranty, and money.
Safety: a service checks for carbon monoxide leaks. You cannot see or smell CO, and it kills. This alone is worth the cost.
Warranty: almost every boiler manufacturer requires annual servicing to keep your warranty valid. Skip a service and your 10 year warranty becomes worthless. That is potentially thousands of pounds of cover lost for the sake of £70.
Money: a well serviced boiler runs more efficiently, using less gas. It also lasts longer and breaks down less often. The service pays for itself.
