Find a Gas Safe Engineer in County Durham

Alex Robson has been fitting and fixing boilers around County Durham for over sixteen years, and the question we get asked most is not about boilers at all. It is how do you find a gas engineer you can actually trust. Here is how to check, and what to watch for.

Check the Gas Safe Register, properly

By law, anyone working on gas appliances in the UK must be on the Gas Safe Register. Not "corgi registered", which has not existed since 2009 and is a red flag when you still see it on a van.

Every registered engineer carries an ID card with a photograph, a licence number and an expiry date. Ask to see it. On the back is a list of exactly what they are qualified to work on, and this is the part people skip. Gas Safe registration is not one blanket qualification. Boilers, cookers, fires and LPG are separate categories, and plenty of engineers registered for natural gas boilers are not qualified for LPG or for caravans and static homes.

Signs worth taking seriously

• No ID card offered. A good engineer produces it without being asked.
• Cash only, up front. Deposits on a large installation are normal. Full payment in cash before any work is not.
• Pressure to decide today. "This price is only good if you sign now" is a sales tactic, not a trade practice.
• A verbal quote only. Get it in writing, with what is and is not included.
• Scare tactics. If you are told a boiler is dangerous, ask exactly what the fault is and ask for it in writing. A genuine engineer will explain it plainly.

Local beats national, for practical reasons

Most national companies subcontract the actual work to local engineers anyway, with a call centre in between. Going direct removes a layer, usually costs less, and means the person who installs your boiler is the same one who services it next year.

Local knowledge matters more than people expect. Housing stock varies enormously across County Durham, from former colliery terraces in DH5 to Washington's new town estates, and water hardness varies with it. An engineer who knows the area diagnoses faster and orders the right parts first time.

Questions worth asking before you book

• What is your Gas Safe registration number?
• Are you qualified for the specific appliance, and for LPG if that is what I have?
• Is the quote fixed, and what would make it change?
• Who actually does the work, you or a subcontractor?
• What happens if something goes wrong after you have finished?

Check the reviews, but read them properly

Volume matters less than pattern. Look for reviews that describe specific jobs rather than generic praise, look at whether the business replies, and look at how recent they are. A hundred reviews from four years ago says less than thirty from this year.
