Boiler Grants in the North East: 2026 Guide
If your boiler is on its last legs, a boiler grant could cover some or even all of the cost of a replacement. There are real schemes out there for North East homeowners, but the eligibility rules catch a lot of people out. Here is an honest look at what is on offer in 2026 and how to find out where you stand.
What boiler grants are available
Most government backed boiler grants are aimed at lower income households and homes that are expensive to heat. Funding is usually tied to whether someone in the home receives certain benefits, or whether the property has a low energy efficiency rating. The main national scheme has run under the name ECO for several years, and your energy supplier is the usual route in.
Because the rules and funding pots change from year to year, the only reliable way to know is to check your eligibility directly rather than going on what a neighbour got last winter. We cover the current ECO route in more detail in our guide to ECO4 boiler grant eligibility.
Who usually qualifies
- Households receiving income related benefits such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit
- Homes with a poor energy efficiency rating, often older or solid wall properties
- Owner occupiers and, in some cases, private tenants with the landlord's permission
Even if you do not qualify for a grant, you are not stuck. Plenty of North East homeowners spread the cost instead, which we explain in our guide to a new boiler on finance.
The honest position with boiler grants is that they are worth checking but they are not guaranteed, and the funding runs out each year. If your boiler is unsafe or beyond economical repair, it is worth getting a proper assessment so you know your options either way.
