Boiler Keeps Breaking Down? The Cause Might Surprise You

Few things are more frustrating than a boiler that keeps failing, especially when each visit seems to fix it only for the fault to return weeks later. When breakdowns keep happening, the problem often is not the boiler itself but the system it is connected to.

How a dirty system causes breakdowns

Sludge and debris circulating through your heating end up passing through the boiler, where they clog narrow components like the heat exchanger and the pump, and jam parts such as the diverter valve. These are among the most common causes of repeat faults. You can replace the failed part, but if the system feeding it is still full of sludge, the new part is put under the same strain and the cycle continues.

The signs it is a system problem

If alongside the breakdowns you also notice cold spots on radiators, a kettling or banging noise, or black water when you bleed a radiator, that points strongly to a contaminated system rather than a one off boiler fault.

Breaking the cycle

The way to stop repeat breakdowns is to clean the whole system, not just replace the latest broken part. A power flush removes the sludge from every radiator, pipe and the boiler, and a corrosion inhibitor keeps it clean afterwards. Fitting a magnetic filter at the same time catches future debris before it can cause trouble. Together they take the strain off your boiler and dramatically reduce the chance of another breakdown.

To keep things running smoothly year round, an annual boiler service or a boiler care plan is well worth having.
