Combi vs System Boiler: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Choosing between a combi and a system boiler is one of the biggest decisions when getting a new boiler installed. The right choice depends on your home, your household, and how you use hot water. Here is the honest breakdown.

What is a combi boiler?

A combination (combi) boiler heats water directly from the mains when you turn on a hot tap. There is no hot water cylinder, no cold water tank in the loft, and no need to wait for water to heat up. It provides heating and hot water from one compact unit.

What is a system boiler?

A system boiler heats water and stores it in a hot water cylinder (usually in an airing cupboard). The cylinder keeps a reserve of hot water ready to use. The boiler heats the cylinder and the radiators, but you need that separate cylinder for hot water storage.

When a combi is the right choice

A combi boiler suits most UK homes. Choose a combi if:

  • You have one or two bathrooms
  • Only one shower runs at a time
  • You want to free up space by removing the cylinder and loft tanks
  • You want instant hot water without waiting
  • You have a smaller property (flat, terrace, semi, or standard 3 to 4 bed)

About 70% of UK homes now have a combi boiler. They are simpler, cheaper to install, and take up far less space.

When a system boiler is the better choice

A system boiler is worth considering if:

  • You have three or more bathrooms
  • Multiple people shower at the same time regularly
  • You have a large house with 15 or more radiators
  • You have low mains water pressure (combis rely on good mains pressure)
  • You already have a cylinder and do not want the disruption of removing it

Can I switch from one to the other?

Yes. Converting from a conventional or system setup to a combi is one of the most common installations we do. It involves removing the old cylinder and loft tanks, which frees up useful cupboard and loft space. The job usually takes one to two days.

Going the other way (combi to system) is less common but possible if your household has grown and you need more hot water capacity.

The honest answer

For the vast majority of 2 to 4 bedroom homes across the North East, a combi boiler is the right choice. It is cheaper to install, simpler to maintain, and provides hot water on demand. Only consider a system boiler if you genuinely have high simultaneous hot water demand.
