Radiator Cold at the Bottom? It Is Probably Sludge

A radiator that is warm at the top but cold at the bottom is almost always caused by sludge build up. Unlike air (which rises to the top and causes cold spots at the top), sludge sinks to the bottom of the radiator and blocks water flow through the lower channels.

What is radiator sludge?

Over time, the water in your central heating system reacts with the metal radiators and pipes, creating iron oxide. This fine black sludge circulates around the system and gradually settles in the lowest points, which is usually the bottom of your radiators. Older systems and systems without a magnetic filter are particularly prone to it.

How to fix it

Option 1: Remove and flush the radiator

For a single affected radiator, the simplest fix is to take it off the wall and flush it outside with a garden hose. You will be amazed (and probably disgusted) at the amount of black sludge that comes out. This is a job you can do yourself if you are comfortable with isolating and removing a radiator, but it can be messy.

Option 2: Full system powerflush

If multiple radiators have cold patches, or if you are getting sludge related problems elsewhere (noisy boiler, lukewarm water, pressure drops), a full powerflush is the proper solution. This involves a machine that pumps high pressure water and cleaning chemicals through your entire system, flushing out all the sludge from every radiator, pipe, and the boiler itself.

A powerflush typically costs £300 to £500 depending on the size of your system and how many radiators you have.

Option 3: Fit a magnetic filter

After cleaning the system, fitting a magnetic filter (like a MagnaClean) catches sludge particles before they settle. The filter sits on the return pipe near the boiler and uses a magnet to trap iron oxide as water passes through. Your engineer cleans it during the annual service. It is one of the best investments you can make in your heating system.
